It was originally named Pentucket by its first inhabitants, the Pentucket Indians. The name Pentucket means "land of the winding river" (The Merrimack River winds its way through much of Haverhill). Haverhill, MA was first settled by Europeans in the year 1640. One year later, in 1641, the land was purchased from the Pentucket Indians and incorporated as the town of Haverhill. Like many New England towns, Haverhill took its name from a community of the same name in England. Haverhill was later incorporated as a city in 1870.

While Haverhill, Massachusetts began as mostly farmland, it evolved into an industrial community that included extensive numbers of mills and tanneries. The primary industry for much of Haverhill's existence was shoe manufacturing.

Haverhill, Massachusetts is situated in northern Essex County, is bordered by the towns of Methuen, Mass on the west, Groveland, Mass and Boxford, Mass on the south, West Newbury, Mass on the east, and the state of New Hampshire on the north. Haverhill, Massachusetts accounts for almost 36 square miles of area and the city includes both rural agricultural areas and urban areas such as the city's historical industrial center.

Today, the city of Haverhill, Mass has 7 industrial parks, 4 18 hole golf courses (Renaissance Golf Club, Garrison Golf Center, Crystal Springs Golf Club, and Bradford Country Club), a ski area, horseback riding, and a skating rink.
